Router hardware[edit]

At the moment I'll use a PC as router, but later I want to use an Embedded system to save energy. Does anybody know a good system for a router? Zeptomoon 12:58, 1 July 2011 (EEST)

User:Mickflemm suggested the RouterBOARD 450G. The problem is that when you buy this board, you also buy a licence for their proprietary closed-source RouterOS (Mikrotik). Which for me is serious case, because I will use it with openwrt and I dont want to give them money for something that I dont support. There are ofcourse other solutions, but this was the best deal. There was suggestion to make a routerboard! We can order everything (Chipset and stuff) and we can print the routerboard PCB. Of course, it has the cons and pros like all experiments. --Sque 13:44, 1 July 2011 (EEST)
Looking at all the crowded small SMD parts, to DIY this is way over my head!! No way can I make that at home... Zeptomoon 18:34, 1 July 2011 (EEST)
These PC-Engines seem to be very nice fully featured small PCs running Ubuntu/BSD/OpenWRT/whatever using only about 5 Watt. Price ca. €90 Zeptomoon 16:29, 3 July 2011 (EEST)
I think I will go for the PC Engines alix2d3. It has 3 independent LAN ports a miniPCI for WiFi and a USB for my DSL router. Plus they seem to be quite free/libre/open! Everything seems to work well with Linux and even the BIOS is FLOSS! Perfect for me I hope. Zeptomoon 04:00, 20 September 2011 (EEST)
