Network Policy[edit]

IPv6: One /60 prefix for each backbone node splitted to 16 /64 prefixes.

IPv4: Due to limited IPs we start with 1 /24 per backbone node and as we move on we switch to <number of router interfaces> IPs per backbone node to maintain compatibility and /24s only on APs. Routing daemon will handle both protocols.

EGP: We divide ASes "on the fly" so that we don't have network areas with more than 100 nodes on IGP. A node with AP counts as 5 nodes in this calculation to reduce overhead.

APs: All APs have ESSID "HWMN", we don't use any captive portals but we use transparent proxying on our secondary proxy ring. All APs must support SLAAC for IPv6 and DHCP for IPv4.

Internet sharing: We have a primary proxy ring for bandwidth contributors and a secondary ring for everyone else. We use Squid for that. No direct L3 internet routing or NAT gateways.
